City of Fridley
Special Election in Fridley - December 8, 2009 - Vote NO
Ballot Question: Shall the Fridley City Charter be amended to allow the City Council to bring revenue issues to the voters in a special election, which will be won or lost by a majority of those voting on the question?
Translation: Shall the City of Fridley raise your taxes in special elections where the fewest number of people vote, disenfranchising the majority of taxpayers in the city. The city would also like to make it easier to pass new taxes and fees by not counting blank ballots as "No" votes.
HD 50A's Position: Tax increases are intentionally difficult in the city charter so that the city does not abuse special elections to get tax increases passed. Currently the city can bring tax/fee increases during the general election which is held every two years. If the city believes that they can create a comprehensive city plan 10 years out and a financial plan 5 years out, we think the city council can project if they need to put a tax increase on general election ballot every two years. If the members of the city council cannot do this, they should be removed from office.
